Pie! Pie! Pie! There’s something about pie that calls to me – it is the ultimate “comfort food” for any time of day and any season of the year. If you’re a pie lover like me — and find yourself in Encinitas, California — then you need to swing by Betty’s Pie Whole Saloon and check out the fine selection of sweet and savory pies.

I first learned about Betty’s Pie Whole Saloon in 2014 during a feature on a local news show – this is actually how I often hear about new places to try in the San Diego area. In October 2014 we made a special trip to Encinitas to check out this unique sounding place. We drove a short distance east off the 5 freeway at Encinitas Boulevard and turned onto Quail Gardens Drive. Betty’s is located inside Sunshine Gardens – a beautiful setting — under the red roof building.

When you walk into Betty’s, your first decision is if you want to try a savory pie, a sweet pie, or both! In addition to a wide variety of pies, the menu also offers sides like dips, soups, and salads. Of course, Betty’s makes full-size whole pies. However, the item that I couldn’t resist was the “sweet wittle pies” – think small, individual whole pies. If you haven’t figured it out by the name of this place – Betty’s only sells whole pies, no slices! This is why the individual pies are so great! The pies are made fresh with real fruit, pure butter, premium chocolate, real cream, and local eggs. You can definitely taste the difference!

In October, I couldn’t decide between savory or sweet – so I ordered both! For savory, I tried the mac-n-cheese pie which had a buttery biscuit crust and creamy mac-n-cheese piled high on the inside. For sweet, I tried the cherry lattice pie à la mode. This classic pie was a nice blend of tart cherries and sweet ice cream. My husband tried the Milky Way pie — perfect for chocolate lovers. He let me try a bite and it was full of chocolatey goodness!

This past weekend we happened to be in Encinitas again – so of course I requested we stop by Betty’s so I could try another pie! We arrived around 11:00 a.m. and it seemed a bit early for pie à la mode so I tried the break-the-fast pie called “Boyd’s sister”. Think of it like an individual quiche-like pie full of eggs, potato, celery, mushrooms, green onions, and cheese in a biscuit crust. It was yummy for the tummy!

The décor of Betty’s Pie Whole Saloon is full of home-style charm and cowgirl touches. Here were some of my favorite touches:

  • Saloon doors between the front kitchen area and the indoor eating area
  • Lattice pie pattern on the floor – didn’t notice this my first visit!
  • Outdoor garden seating available
  • Indoor “covered porch” family-style seating

Betty’s Pie Whole Saloon is open Monday – Friday 11 am -8 pm; Saturday 10 am – 8 pm; and Sunday 10 am – 6 pm. Pie selection is subject to availability, so if you’re wanting a specific pie be sure to call ahead and place an order.

If you find yourself driving along the 5 freeway in north San Diego County, and you’ve got a hankering for some pie, be sure to stop by Betty’s in Encinitas and sit for a spell. Take in the ambience and savor the flavors of homemade pie.
