After a memorable day at “The Happiest Place on Earth” the last stop as people leave Main Street, U.S.A. is often at the Emporium to purchase some souvenirs to bring the magic home with them. These gifts typically take the form of t-shirts, hats, picture frames, stuffed animals, and the like. However right across the way, next to the Opera House at the foot of Main Street, is another shop that has unique treasures available for Disney fans. The Disney Gallery and Disneyana Shop is located in the building that used to be the Main Street Bank.

When Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955 it had a functional bank on Main Street that was operated by The Bank of America. Walt Disney located an original bank vault, circa 1904, and had it installed inside the bank.1 By the early 1990s, the prevalence of ATMs replaced the need for a bank branch on Main Street and the bank was closed. For a few years the building housed the annual passholder processing center and in 2009 became the new home of the Disney Gallery when it moved from New Orleans Square to Main Street. The Disney Gallery and Disneyana Shop feature original works of art from artists inspired by the Disney theme parks and movies. One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk inside is the bank vault – it is still there today although the vault door is left open and showcases art.

One of the reasons we like to visit the Disney Gallery is to see what special items we can find for our Disney collection at home. The Disneyana Shop offers a wide variety of art in a range of price points. We especially like the hand-drawn art available from the Artist Sketch Collection. There are many sketches offered at the shop “ready-to-go” or the sketches can be customized/personalized and picked up later. Another offering is hand-painted animation cels from the Ink & Paint Collection. You can also select art prints from an extensive selection at the Art on Demand kiosk. Depending on when you visit, there is a chance you’ll have an opportunity to watch some Disney artists at work. On a recent trip to Disneyland we noticed the Disneyana Shop was featuring collectible items for the 60th Celebration – some of which are not available in other shops.
