Sweet Bricks Toffee: Take Candy From Strangers!

“Never take candy from strangers.”

You, like me, probably grew up with parents warning you to never take candy from strangers. So imagine my surprise when I found Sweet Bricks, a handmade toffee shop in San Diego, who uses this catch phrase to lure you inside its store front. Trust me, if you decide to take candy from these strangers you won’t be disappointed.

I first learned of Sweet Bricks when I visited Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream in June. They had partnered together to offer some special toffee toppings for Hammond’s 1st Anniversary. Sadly, the toppings were all gone when we visited, but I was intrigued by this concept of gourmet handmade toffee. I started following Sweet Bricks on Instagram and the pictures of handmade toffee are tantalizing.

A couple of weeks ago I couldn’t take the temptation any longer and visited the Sweet Bricks shop in downtown San Diego. It’s located in a historic section of E street and has a welcoming curb presence. The flavors of toffee that are offered changes daily, so if you have a special type you would like to try be sure to call in advance or place a special order.

When I visited, I purchased the 1 pound box which included 4 types of toffee. It was a difficult decision – they all looked so tempting. The shop offered free samples, which was helpful. I tried the “Berry Cobbler Toffee”, but decided to bring home these flavors:

Salted Dark Chocolate Toffee – Building on a “traditional” toffee with a flavor combination of sweet and salty, this one has a dark chocolate top layer that completes the fabulous flavor.

Bonfire S’mores Toffee – Think campfire s’more with a toffee crunch. This layered creation includes graham crackers, marshmallow cream, and chocolate along with a layer of traditional toffee.

Cookies ‘n Cream Toffee – Light and chocolatey this toffee has a chocolate cookie base, a layer of toffee, and is topped with white frosting cream and crumbled chocolate cookies on top.
