Fall Favorite with a Twist at Disneyland

It’s almost autumn and that means it’s time for apples – especially caramel dipped apples! At the Disneyland Resort, the harvest and Halloween celebration is in full swing through November 1st during “Halloween Time”. On Main Street, the Candy Palace offers several specialty treats throughout the year. Many of them are handmade daily at the Main Street Candy Kitchen. One of these handmade treats was our confectionary delight the other day – an Apple Pie Candied Apple. It’s a fall favorite with a twist.

Earlier, we had seen some of the other Halloween Time candied apples on display at Pooh’s Corner in Critter Country. The ones that looked especially delightful were the “poison apple” variety and the “Dia de los Muertos” Mickey and Minnie apples. The Halloween Time decorated apples look almost too beautiful to eat!

Candied apples are available year-round at the Disneyland Resort. The decorative details on them are often quite elaborate – Maleficent, Olaf, 60th Birthday Mickey or Minnie. In all the times I’ve visited Disneyland, I had never gotten one of the candied apples – until this trip on September 21, 2015.

The Apple Pie Candied Apple came highly recommended by a Candy Palace cast member named Alice. She told us about a time recently when an Afghanistan veteran came in and got one of the Apple Pie Candied Apples. He went out to the patio and enjoyed his sweet treat. About a half hour later, the veteran came back and bought 8 more apples to take home. Alice said she wished she could have given them to him as a thank you gift for serving our country. The Apple Pie Candied Apple is so simple in decoration compared to the others, but this one sounded delicious and tempting.

Alice described the apple as being a Granny Smith apple, dipped in caramel, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, double-dipped in white chocolate, and dusted with graham cracker crumbs. The Mickey ears are made out of marshmallows. She said it tasted just like an apple pie and didn’t have any calories (with a wink and a smile). Well, you know what they say, calories don’t count at Disney. I decided this Apple Pie Candied Apple sounded too good to resist and purchased one ($9.99 + tax) to bring home.

When we got home, I couldn’t wait to enjoy this treat. I cut it in half and then into slices. Each bite tasted like apple pie – just as Alice had described. I’m not sure why I’ve never gotten a candied apple before this trip – maybe the thought of eating one at the park has always seemed so messy. However, Disneyland has these great take-home containers that fit the candied apples perfectly. I’m glad I decided to take Alice’s recommendation to try one of the Apple Pie Candied Apples – it was yummy!

Next time you’re visiting the Disneyland Resort, I hope you’ll make a point to visit one of the candy shops that make candy on site. The candy kitchens have peek-through windows where you can often watch the candy makers creating the sweet treats. There are several to choose from: Candy Palace on Main Street (Disneyland), inside Pooh’s Corner in Critter Country (DL), Trolley Treats on Buena Vista Street (Disney California Adventure), and Marceline’s Confectionery in the Downtown Disney District.

Now it’s your turn: Do you prefer the classic candied/caramel apple or are you ready to go to Disneyland and try an Apple Pie Candied Apple?
