A Midday Meal Aboard the USS Midway

Even though it wasn’t officially summer yet, Flag Day seemed like an appropriate time to embark on another outing on my Summer Bucket List. And what better place to spend the afternoon than aboard the USS Midway? We arrived at the Embarcadero area of San Diego around 11:30 and parked a few blocks away at the San Diego County Administration Building. We walked along the waterfront a short distance to the USS Midway. Every day could be Flag Day on the Midway as it is typically decked out in red, white, and blue – so it was the perfect place to spend this patriotic day.

We boarded the ship and walked through the Hangar Deck toward the aft end to the Fantail Café. I’ve visited the Midway once before, almost 10 years ago, but we didn’t eat at the Café. For the past few years whenever I have been walking along the Embarcadero, I have looked up and seen this Café. Today was the day we were going to check it out. The menu is typical Americana food with simple, yet tasty, options including sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, and pizza. Whenever I go to a new diner, I like to order the tuna melt so that’s what I got at the Fantail Café and my husband ordered the grilled cheese. My sandwich came with chips (which we shared) and added 2 Cherry Cokes (served chilled in plastic bottles). We found a table along the railing on the fantail and enjoyed our lunch.

After lunch, we wandered amongst the displays and exhibits in the Hangar Deck including a new movie called Voices of Midway. Then we went up to the Flight Deck and looked at the different aircraft on display. The Flight Deck is 4 acres in size! From the top of the Midway there is quite an impressive view of San Diego Bay, North Island Naval Air Station, and the Coronado Bridge. There is so much to see and do on the Midway we decided to become members — so we’ll have many more opportunities to explore this historic ship and learn about its important role in American history.

Summer Bucket List Update: Visiting the Midway and eating at the Fantail Café was one of the items on my summer bucket list (#4). We went to celebrate Flag Day and kicked off summer a little early.
